China’s HNA Group, through its Hainan Airlines (HU, Haikou) subsidiary, says it has completed its acquisition of a 23.7% stake in Brazil’s Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras (AD, Campinas Viracopos) thus becoming the LCC’s largest shareholder in terms of economic interest.

Following the transaction, valued at USD450 million, Hainan Airlines will gain three seats on Azul’s board.

“The investment has paved the way for the two air airlines to cooperate through the development of global networking synergy, code sharing, new route development, frequent flyer program, marketing programs and cargo cooperation, as well as other strategic initiatives in the region,” a statement said. “Moreover, both parties will benefit from the substantial passenger traffic between two very strong global trade partners – China and Brazil.”

Cooperation between Azul and Hainan Airlines has been growing in recent months with a number of initiatives already announced.

This year alone, Azul has said it would transfer up to 1,700 flight crew to HNA Group as part of its cost-reduction plan. HNA Group has, in turn, agreed to take delivery of two of Azul’s three A350-900s that were to have been delivered in 2018 as part of a lease agreement with AerCap.

The two have also pledged to open up flights between Brazil and China using Lisbon as a stopover. The choice of Lisbon as an intermediate point is significant given that Hainan Airlines recently acquired 25% convertible bonds in TAP Portugal (TP, Lisbon) from Azul thus gaining a seat on the Portuguese carrier’s board as well.

Doctors at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have begun testing an app on the Apple Watch to help people with epilepsy monitor seizures.

Dubbed EpiWatch, the software uses a combination of patient response data and sensor data to detect and measure a seizure. When a patient feels the onset of a seizure, he or she taps an icon to start the app which, in turn, activates sensors to begin collecting heart rate and body movement data.

John Hopkins Watch InfographicAbout 500 patients are already using the EpiWatch app daily and have agreed to share their usage and seizure data with Johns Hopkins researchers, who hope to use that data to ultimately predict seizures before they happen.

“We think we can detect seizures based on convulsions, or on the ability to respond to the app when the app detects a heart rate change,” Nathan Crone, MD, told Fast Company.

The detection power of the app comes from integrating the biometric data from the heart rate sensor and movement sensors with the user awareness data.

Crone and his colleague Gregory Krauss, MD, think they can improve on the detection of seizures by adding more early-stage patient response functions to prompt users with the app.

“A seizure detector might encourage patients to go out and do things by themselves maybe that they wouldn’t otherwise do, or maybe their parents would feel more comfortable leaving them alone, or maybe their spouse would be able to leave them alone,” Crone said. “That could affect quality of life in a big way.”

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has signed Lockheed Martin subsidiary Systems Made Simple to a $33.3 million contract to modernize and maintain its Enrollment Health Benefits Determination program.

The EHBD program offers Veterans access to their own medical records, information on VA health benefits and help making decisions on implementing their personal health plans.

Systems Made Simple will provide project management, technical architecture analysis and design, VistA electronic health records systems development, and enrollment systems development, operations and maintenance, officials say.

The 39-month order was awarded as part of the VA’s Transformation Twenty One Total Technology program, or T4.

“EBHD will help Veterans and their families obtain high quality benefits in a timely manner, which is part of the Veterans Affairs strategy to increase the ease and convenience of the benefits enrollment process,” said Horace Blackman, vice president of health and life sciences at Lockheed Martin’s Information Systems & Global Solutions, in a statement.

After multiple potential HIPAA violations involving electronic protected health information, Illinois-based Advocate Health Care Network has settled with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Civil Rights for $5.55 million.

Advocate has also agreed to adopt a corrective action plan, according to OCR, which calls this the largest HIPAA settlement against a single entity to date. It’s the result of the “extent and duration of the alleged noncompliance,” with some infractions dating back to the Security Rule’s inception.

A corresponding investigation from the Illinois State Attorney General’s corresponding investigation, along with the large number of patients whose information was affected by Advocate’s noncompliance, also led to the settlement, officials said.

The OCR investigation began in 2013, in response to Advocate’s submission of three breach notification reports that pertained to separate events at Advocate Medical Group, a subsidiary of Advocate. Combined, these three breaches affected the ePHI of 4 million patients.

The results of the investigation revealed Advocate failed to conduct a thorough risk assessment to all ePHIs; did not implement policies to limit physical access to electronic information systems in its large data support center; didn’t obtain written business associate contracts including assurances the entity would protect ePHIs in its possession; and left an unencrypted laptop locked overnight in a vehicle.

“We hope this settlement sends a strong message to covered entities that they must engage in a comprehensive risk analysis and risk management to ensure that individuals’ ePHI is secure,” OCR Director Jocelyn Samuels, said in a statement.

“This includes implementing physical, technical and administrative security measures sufficient to reduce the risks to ePHI in all physical locations and on all portable devices to a reasonable and appropriate level.”

Improve your company digital strategy with content and visual designs that communicate your brands message effectively.

Customer trends over the past few years have shifted to a point where we now understand that brands that implement an effective company digital strategy are the ones whom are able to consistently increase product sales and loyalty. Consumers now require that brands, regardless of the product or service they are providing have a support mechanism in place so they may engage directly with the brand and it’s receptive target audience. They want to be able to ask technical questions  and have the ability to cross reference the company’s response to how other customers found its usefulness.

Recently we conducted our own A/B Split Tests, and we found several key features brands should consider implementing into their website in order to increase their customers happiness. The greatest return on investment are the following.

  • Blog / News Section
  • Downloads Page: Brand Assets, Product Manuals, Photos, etc
  • Knowledge Base: Technical support allow multiple users to comment on responses
  • Video Tour

More important than anything else, a company website should drive sales leads from it’s presence. Your content and design should convey your brands purpose, your contact information should be visible, preferably at the top of your homepage. SEO is another critical factor of website design. Search engines analyze your websites content from top to bottom, left to right in order to index and rank it against your competitors. The key to improving your standing is learning to leverage different features that make users what to visit your company website.

Operating a business with a moral compass in this day in age often raises arguments about the violation of fiduciary responsibilities to the company’s sole purpose of maximizing profits and efficiency. Shareholders tend to leverage circumstances in order pressure executives to make amoral business decisions, industry competitors target social concerns in order to dilute market share in their favor, seasoned employees use office politics to tip scales. So how can business with a moral compass can operate and still remain profitable?

Runnging a Business With a Moral CompassInstitutionalizing Business Morality as a Formal Discipline

We sometimes believe that there are fundamental pillars instilled into our human society structure or at least a pattern for ongoing change in dramatic social events that occur through the generations. When crisis arise around world such as the riots in London and Stockholm, the financial crisis of 2008, or ongoing institutionalized racism worldwide — we often try to understand or rationalize them as temporary deviations from the norm. These are ontological assumptions embedded through common core education shape our ability to understand the nature of social change requirements for business with moral compasses.

Prior to the major social upheavals during the 1960s, business ethics, social responsibility, or cause/effect weren’t major considerations in the business world. During the 1970s, ethics took strides and began to be taught in business schools. A 1982 survey by Hoffman and Moore exhibited that of  “655 schools that responded, 317 said that a business ethics course was being offered.”

Good Personal Ethics Should Define Business Morality

Business ethics should be extrapolated from the golden rule — “treat others the way you want to be treated yourself.” Contrary to ongoing practices, simply because money is involved doesn’t mean that a company should ignore fundamental moral business practices. Entrepreneurs, brands, and shareholders often forget that we are all consumers, we all know and understand what it’s like to deal with businesses on both sides. We’ve come to understand the value the major differences in the two ethical standards. Basics tenet is that all business adhere to some level of good intent in making sure that both parties (consumers & company) be afforded respect. I believe a running a profitable moral business is feasible as long as an ethical money-making business plan is devise in conjunction and adhered to.

Benefits Of Running A Running a Business With a Moral Compass

With social media essentially shaping a company’s reputation, any business that plots its course with a moral compass will enhance its own reputation. Doing this enables the business to build a loyal customer base solely on their good intentions methodology thereby increasing gross sales and profitability. A moral business increases the allure of the company to prospective employees, enhancing the talent of the recruitment pool. Ethical business standards also reduce employee turnover rates and cuts human resources costs. Vendors and potential investors will take note and your business can prosper from the decision to adhere to running a business with a moral compass.

The boating industry needs culturally targeted digital marketing to drastically improve conversion rates and ROI of their targeted customer. We argue that the dollars should be spent or slowly transitioned to expanding a Boat/Yacht companies digital presence. We believe that every dollar spent to market products on third party websites will become 3x detrimental to the businesses long-term online growth strategy as it forces businesses to rely on the success of conversions from 3rd party websites such as BoatTrader.com, PowerBoatListings.com, and other online forums and magazines.

Culturally Targeted Digital Marketing

First let’s understand the boating industry demographics..

Boating remains a middle-class recreational activity. National Marine Manufactures Association reports that 81% of adults who went boating had a household income of less than $100,000; 65% had an income less the $75,000. (Only 16% had a household income of $100,000 or greater).

Boating participants were more likely to be male (58%), younger than age 50 (74%) and have a household income of $50,000-$99,999 (41%). Approximately 7% of boating participants were age 65 or older and 10% were retired. 8% of boating participants were Hispanic and 10% were African American. Download NMMA Report Abstract

Now let’s understand how those margins become receptive to culturally targeted marketing initiatives.

Cultural Target for the Boating Industry

Cultural Target for the Boating Industry

Culture is important to online marketing because it lays the foundation for how consumers think, communicate, and understand the information a business presents to them. By leveraging the provided contextual information about potential customers, business are able to strategically implement targeted inbound and outbound marketing initiatives which in turn will improve conversions of their targeted audience.

Chaffey (2009) makes arguments that understanding the cultural background of prospects and it’s consumers is fundamental to building a successful marketing campaigns and is equally if not more important for digital marketing. The culture of online audiences should be embodied in each promotional material. The content of that marketing should both depict the product clearly but also recognize the cultural expectations of the targeted audience.

If you were to consider every piece of marketing material you have seen in your lifespan and attempt to extract the products usefulness without remembering at the specific portion of the marketing content that lead you to find the product worth purchase… You will easily see why cultural relevance is essential to every piece of product or brand marketing strategy.

What is inbound digital marketing?
Since 2006, inbound marketing has been the most effective marketing method for doing business online. Instead of the old outbound marketing methods of buying ads, buying email lists, and praying for leads, inbound marketing focuses on creating quality content that pulls people toward your company and product, where they naturally want to be. By aligning the content you publish with your customer’s interests, you naturally attract inbound traffic that you can then convert, close, and delight over time.

From a business standpoint, understanding the different options and correct implementation phases of the different elements surrounding culturally target digital marketing strategies will drastically change your return-on-investment.
